Summer savory (Satureja hortensis L.) is a medicinal plant whose growth and biomass production are influenced by light conditions. This study was conducted under controlled conditions to investigate the effects of light intensity, far-red (FR) light, and ecotype on the morphological and physiological traits of two Iranian summer savory ecotypes (Broad-leaf and Esfahani). The experiment was performed as a factorial arrangement in a randomized complete block design with three factors: ecotype, light intensity at three levels (200, 300, and 400 µmol photons m⁻² s⁻¹), and the presence or absence of FR light. Analysis of variance showed that light intensity was the most influential factor affecting the evaluated traits, with significant effects on plant height, number of leaves and lateral branches, stem diameter, biomass, root length, leaf area, chlorophyll a, and relative water content (RWC). FR light and ecotype also had significant effects on several traits. The Broad-leaf ecotype exhibited higher mean values than the Esfahani ecotype for most traits. Most two- and three-way interactions were not significant, whereas the interaction between light intensity and FR light was significant for some traits, including leaf area and stem diameter. The 200 µmol photons m⁻² s⁻¹ light intensity resulted in the highest values for several growth-related traits. Overall, light intensity was the primary factor determining the growth performance of summer savory under the controlled conditions of this study.
